Yumi Nishimura (b. 1989, Tokyo) is a Hiroshima-based painter and educator. Her practice explores a possibility in painting through a tension between narrative and materiality (matière or painting texture). From this exploration, she seeks to create works that are “more than an event but not yet a story” — images in a suspended state, where something is happening yet its meaning remains elusive.

Her current focus is on “flat characters,” a concept drawn from (Swiss folklorist) Max Lüthi’s theory of folktales, where individuality and emotions are suppressed for the sake of the storyline. These figures serve as her points of departure, but on the canvas they are diverted and transformed through the unpredictable behavior of paint. This process is accompanied by uncertainty, yet in moving back and forth between image and material, she identifies a process of transformation that generates new possibilities for the development of her painting practice.

She received her PhD in Painting from Kyoto City University of Arts in 2019.

Her works are in collections such as the Takahashi Ryutaro Collection and the Kankuro Ueshima Collection. She is the recipient of the Kenjiro Hosaka Prize (CAF ART AWARD 2016) and the Mitsubishi Corporation Art Gate Program Scholarship (2013).

 

西村有未は「図形的登場人物」をモチーフとし、物語（イメージ）と物質(マチエール)の拮抗の中から絵画の可能性を探っています。「図形的登場人物」とはヨーロッパ民間伝承文学研究者マックス・リュティの著書「ヨーロッパの昔話　その形と本質」にて使用される構造的な概念で、"昔話"において登場人物は余計な内面描写や装飾を省き、平坦に、図形的に描かれているというものです。西村はこの概念を出発点としますが、彼女の絵画は決して図形的登場人物の内面を描くための挿絵を目指してはいません。そこにあるのはイメージでもマチエールでもないもの、あるいはイメージとマチエールの重なりであり、それによって生まれる別の何か（絵画しか言えないもの）なのです。

2019年京都市立芸術大学大学院 美術研究科博士(後期)課程 美術専攻研究領域(油画)修了。
